Your Coverage Is invited for ASTRONOMY DAY at the FLEET: Free Activities Include Ask an Astronomer, Night Sky Photography Workshop, Lunar Craters and Dry Ice Comet Demos. Or Join a Public Challenger Mission and Saturday Science Club for Girls, This SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12!

What:

Astronomy Day at the Fleet will provide visitors an opportunity to meet several of our staff experts. An Ask the Astronomer table allows you to chat with our host of The Sky Tonight, Dr. Lisa Will, about upcoming space phenomena. Console operator and amazing Fleet photographer Mary Anderson hosts a Night Sky Photography table about how she gets the amazing shots you see regularly on our Facebook page. Upstairs at the Exploration Bar, the public is invited to join in on the Lunar Craters Activity 10AM–3PM, or check out Dry Ice Comet Demos downstairs at 11AM & 1PM. Most activities free with admission.

At Saturday Science Club for Girls: Reach for the Stars!, girls in grades 5–8 will search for constellations and explore the mysteries of the Milky Way, plus investigate our closest neighbors in the solar system and other celestial objects light years away! The fun is from noon to 2PM.

The Public Nierman Challenger Mission will “Return to the Moon.” You, your friends and your family are invited to take the ultimate trip by experiencing our realistic Mission Control and Space Station simulators! This two-hour program introduces you to the teamwork, technology and drama involved in space travel. In the year 2015, astronauts are on their way back to the moon to stay! Navigating their way into lunar orbit, participants launch a probe and analyze a variety of data to select a site for a permanent moon base. Ages 10 and up. The mission is from noon to 2PM,

That night, don’t forget to look up in the sky for International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN). Thanks to intriguing science results and beautiful images from recent lunar missions, the Moon tantalizes both scientists and the public with its mysteries. Now in its fourth year, InOMN provides the public with an opportunity to view and learn about Earth's nearest neighbor. The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) mission has been orbiting the moon since October 7. Although most NASA officials have been furloughed due to the government shutdown, missions that are in the critical phase have been given allowance to be monitored.

Push Your Brain Into High Velocity During FAMILY SCIENCE SATURDAYS: MECHANICS!

What:

Come and learn about mechanics, the science that concerns itself with the effects that forces have on bodies! As families create objects that move, push, displace or achieve velocity in the Tinkering Studio, we will analyze which aspects of performance are mechanically inclined. Special recognition will go to those who cobble together the most impressive mechanical creations!

OCTOBER 18—Astronomy Event: Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

OCTOBER 21–22—Astronomy Event: Orionids Meteor Shower—Meteor shower that will be visible after midnight. Shower originates out of the constellation Orion. Remnants of Comet Halley.

OCTOBER 26—Halloween Family Day in Balboa Park with discounted admission. Kids 12 and under receive free gallery admission to the Fleet when accompanied by a paying adult. Kids 5 and under can join us in Kid City to get crafty with Pasta Skeletons and Pumpkin Guts. All ages can head to the Tinkering Studio to channel your repressed inventor and go wild with FrankenToys! What mysterious creations will arise as you take apart, mix and match and build previously unimaginable creatures and contraptions? Explore the inner workings of your favorite toys and make something truly unique or perhaps even frightening. Then check out our education table on the Prado and make Slime!

OCTOBER 29—Teacher Open House–Explore the exhibits, take part in fun hands-on activities, watch a show in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater and learn about the new educational programs we'll be offering this year. Enjoy refreshments and enter to win prizes. 5:30–8PM

NOVEMBER 2/9/16/23/30—Family Science Saturdays: Speed. In its simplest expression speed can be seen as the rate at which an object covers distance. A car on a track, a plane through the air, or an object falling to the ground. We in the “tHinkering” studio will be paying close attention to see who amongst our many patrons can generate the greatest speed in whatever endeavor they choose, from the many arrays that we supply. Activities included with admission. 1PM–3PM

NOVEMBER 6—Origami with Bruce Gemmell. The traditional art of paper folding has evolved into a venerable modern art form with solid foundations in math and science. A flat sheet of material is transformed into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Tinkering Studio Coordinator Gemmell has taught architecture both in the US and abroad. This event will be held the first Wednesday of each month. 4PM–7PM. Participation is included with gallery admission.

NOVEMBER 6––The Sky Tonight: Comets. The year 2013 has been a good one for comets. We saw Comet PanStarrs in the Spring, and Comet ISON is promising to be spectacular in the late Fall sky. But what are comets? Where do they come from? What are they made of? Join us in November to learn all about comets! Our popular monthly live planetarium show of the sky in SD that night reaches a new level of stunning full-color visuals and incredibly realistic simulations of cosmic phenomena with our new state-of-the-art digital GSX™ projection system. A professional astronomer leads backyard stargazers through the universe. Weather and operational requirement permitting, the SD County Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors on the Prado in Balboa Park. This is a separate event held on the first Wednesday of each month. 7PM & 8:15PM

NOVEMBER 7–DECEMBER 8––Young Scientists session 3 “Wacky Weather” will delve into Measuring Weather, Wet Weather, Sunny Science and Winter Wonderland. Preschoolers age 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scientific wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scientific questioning. Four 4-week sessions run monthly. Limited to eight students per class. Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning 9AM–10:30AM. Members $75, non-members $85.

NOVEMBER 7—Exploring Ethics explores Neuroscience and Video Games. Video games are increasingly in the news. Rapid advances in brain research are also enabling neuroscientists, in collaboration with game developers, to develop games that contribute to observable educational and therapeutic innovations. While potentially beneficial, it is important to ask about the ethical and social implications associated with the merging of neuroscience with game development and use. In conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet welcomes guests to encounter science from an ethical viewpoint; brings together community leaders of various backgrounds to examine current scientific issues from diverse perspectives; and invites the public to explore with them how science can best serve society. 5–7PM; William & Grayson Boehm Community Forum at the Reuben H. NOVEMBER 9—Saturday Science Club for Girls: Tour of a Cell. Join scientists Alexandra Bortnick and Lauren Mack as we take the ultimate tour: your cells! Learn about the function and structure of a cell by creating an edible cell. Visit Cellular Journey in the exhibit gallery and extract DNA to take home! Girls in grades 5–8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. 12 noon–2PM; members $12, nonmembers $14; must pre-register by calling (619) 238-1233 x806.

NOVEMBER 12—Winning Every Day with Shannon Miller: Life Lessons from an Olympian, Mom, Entrepreneur and Cancer Survivor presented by ScholarShare. Shannon's story of her journey from Olympic gymnast to Mompreneur to cancer survivor will inspire and motivate anyone! Regardless of their profession, all women struggle to find time for themselves. They are always on the go, and often serve as the primary caregiver to their family and friends. Shannon wants to empower women with the knowledge and education they need to make informed decisions on health and fitness for themselves and for their family. She asks herself every morning, "How will I empower one woman today?" 6 p.m. pre-event reception; 7 p.m. presentation in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater.
