In celebration of our 40th Anniversary, we’re bringing back the nine best IMAX films of all time for a Fan Favorite Film Festival. Each week, all summer long, a top pick will play twice a day. It’s your chance to revisit the peak of Everest, explore the wonders revealed by Hubble or dive with Dolphins again. Learn All About Squishy, Symmetrical Swimmers at Saturday Science Club on June 8!

 

What:

Kids in grades 5–8 dive in to World Oceans Day by learning the "Secrets of Squid" at Saturday Science Club! Have you ever seen a cephalopod? Get an inside look at the anatomy that makes these creatures so fascinating. We will take an up-close look at these incredible creatures and learn about their internal and external anatomy through the art of dissection. Join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics.

RISE ABOVE PLASTICS with Surfrider and Go on a Coral Reef Adventure––Senior Monday, June 3!

 

What:

Become coastal friendly and love our beaches with Scott Harrison, a founder of Surfrider’s campaign Rise Above Plastics (RAP). RAP advocates for the reduction of the impacts of plastics on our coastal environment, promotes awareness of plastic pollution and encourages the reduction of single use plastics. Seniors 65+ enjoy the many Fleet exhibit galleries, the great lecture and in June, Coral Reef Adventure, all at a discount!

Run Rings Around SATURN at The Sky Tonight, June 5!

 

What:

Fascinating us with its beauty, the second-largest planet in the solar system is home to a magnificent ring system and over 60 moons, and it features prominently in the June evening sky. Join us to learn more about Saturn and the other celestial objects in the summer sky. Our popular monthly live planetarium show of the sky in SD that night reaches a new level of stunning full-color visuals and incredibly realistic simulations of cosmic phenomena with our new state-of-the-art digital GSX™ projection system. Weather permitting, the SD County Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors on the Prado in Balboa Park.

Break It on Down at Family Science Saturdays: Dismantlemania!

 

What:

Dismantlemania is the dissection of found objects (visitors are welcome to bring their own), emphasizing the importance of analysis and the development of the valuable skill of reverse engineering. Challenge Saturday, the last Saturday of each month, will culminate in two visitor contests––the first to successfully evaluate the use of parts from the original objects in the new constructions, and the second to draw diagrams/illustrations of the operations of either the original discarded objects or the new and improved creations.

Still a Few Fleet Science Fun SUMMER CAMPS Available, & Union Bank Scholarships for GREEN CAMPS!

What:

In order to raise the next generation of eco-warriors, Union Bank has generously made full weeklong scholarships available for any campers who request it for Green Engineering, Shocking Forces, EcoTech, Save the Planet or Secondhand Science camps. Any family with financial need can submit a scholarship application to our Client Services Department at 619-238-1233, ext. 806.

The Heikoff Giant Dome Theater––Our New Name for What Our Old-School Fans Still Call OmniMax––Now Plays Both Great IMAX®Films and Planetarium Shows!

 

What:

The Fleet is home to Southern California’s only Giant Dome Theater, the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. It’s the world’s first IMAX Dome Theater, featuring the world’s first NanoSeam™ Dome screen in an IMAX theater, and offers two unique experiences in one space: IMAX films and planetarium shows. The gigantic, hemispherical, 76-foot tilted and curved screen wraps the entire theater, offering an immersive viewing experience, enhancing the feeling of motion and giving you the sensation that you’re in the show. With a 16,000-watt digital surround sound system, it provides a stunning visual and audio experience.

IMAX is the world’s largest film format, yielding incredible clarity and spectacular images. IMAX films’ special projectors weigh as much as a small car and enable the incredible film images to be projected with brightness and clarity on the huge Dome screen.

Our state-of-the-art digital GSX™ Projection System’s planetarium shows allow audiences to journey to the outer reaches of space from the comfort of their theater seats courtesy of both pre-produced planetarium programs (some created by our own stellar in-house team!) and The Sky Tonight, a monthly live, astronomer-led planetarium show. The Fleet offers two options for hearing-impaired guests: closed-captions and assistive listening devices.

Celebrate Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s 40TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR! Forty years ago, a spark ignited our imaginations! Join us in celebration of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and its 40 years of success in bringing hands-on science to our San Diego community. March 9, 1973, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center opened its doors and brought interactive exhibits and the world’s first IMAX® Dome Theater to San Diego. Today, the Fleet inspires minds and connects individuals to science and technology through more than 100 “do touch” exhibits for all ages and amazing IMAX films and planetarium shows in the recently renovated Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. Our year-long celebration will feature blockbuster exhibitions, incredible events and dynamic educational experiences. Our staff and volunteers are dedicated to connecting individuals to science and technology, and we look forward to our next four decades of inspiring lifelong learning.

 

 

JUNE 4—FREE First Tuesday at the FLEET! Free admission to galleries for SD City/County residents, active-duty military, college students. Tickets for Giant Dome Theater shows are only $10. ID required.

 

JUNE 5—Origami with Bruce Gemmell. The traditional art of paper folding has evolved into a venerable modern art form with solid foundations in math and science. A flat sheet of material is transformed into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Basic origami folds can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. Participation is included with gallery admission. 4PM–7PM.

 

JUNE 5—Exploring Ethics celebrates Women in Science. Rachel Carson biographer Linda Lear will discuss how far we have come since the landmark book Silent Spring was written and how far we have yet to go. In conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet welcomes guests to encounter science from an ethical viewpoint; brings together community leaders of various backgrounds to examine current scientific issues from diverse perspectives; and invites the public to explore with them how science can best serve society. 5:30–7PM; William & Grayson Boehm Community Forum at the Reuben H. June 6–23—Young Scientists, session 9. Plants will dig into nature so kids learn from Flora & Fauna, Plant Structures and Sprouting. Preschoolers age 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scientific wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scientific questioning. Four 4-week sessions run monthly. Limited to eight students per class. Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning 9AM–10:30AM. This will be a shorter, three-week session, with a special price: Members: $56.25 per child; nonmembers: $63.75 per child

 

JUNE 8—World Oceans Day—People around the planet celebrate and honor the body of water that links us all, for what it provides humans and what it represents. Help protect our ocean for the future. Spread the word about ocean conservation by “Wearing Blue and Telling Two.” The world’s ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, helps feed us, regulates our climate, cleans the water we drink, offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines and provides limitless inspiration! IMAX en Español es una oportunidad para usted y su familia que disfruten las películas IMAX en español cada tercer domingo del mes. Adicionalmente audífonos sin costo para quienes deseen escuchar el audio en español siempre están disponibles para las películas que se presentan con el audio original en Ingles. JUNE 16—IMAX® en Español––Bugs. Enter the magical, miniscule world of a butterfly and a praying mantis, and meet their bizarre and beautiful buggy friends. IMAX en Español is an opportunity for you and your family to enjoy IMAX films in Spanish. Additionally, headsets are always available free of charge for audiences to listen to available Spanish soundtracks when films with English soundtracks play. Admission includes one film and the Fleet’s exhibit galleries, which feature more than 100 hands-on exhibits for all ages. JUNE 24—Astronomy Milestone: 30th Anniversary of the First American Woman in Space, Astronaut Sally Ride

 

JUNE 26—NASA Launch: IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectograph)—Will increase understanding of energy transport into corona and solar wind and provide an archetype for stellar atmospheres.

 

JUNE 27–28—Astronomy Event: Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower—Meteor shower that will visible after 12am. Shower originates out of the constellation Aquarius. Remnants of Comet Mardson & Kracht.

 

JUNE 28–30—International Autonomous Robotics Competition (iARoC) Two-day robotics competition through the Wintriss Technical School. Team members get into the exhibit galleries for free. Set-up begins on Friday night in the Community Forum and both learning labs. Ends on Sunday night. Student participants and their guests will be wearing wristbands. All Fleet visitors are welcome to view the competition in the Community Forum in the stanchioned-off area.
