Origins of Life Just Extended Through JUNE 16! The Bubbling Glass Canisters Have Exhibited Intriguing Results––So Our Citizen Scientist Volunteers Will Continue to Conduct the Experiment and Explicate Answers for Fleet Visitors for an Extra Week!

What:

“Schmutz” in the jar! We have answers on a molecular level from the intriguing array of glass tubing, gas canisters, bubbling liquids and zapping electricity currently in residence at the Fleet as a working science experiment––and a work of art! Test results indicate that the experiment is producing ATP, the universal energy-carrying molecule that provides the “oomph” necessary to make the chemical reactions go that drive life. We are also testing for acidity of the solution and the presence of proteins and sugars––all tests that indicate the creation of the basic building blocks of life. This unique exhibit experience utilizes a dedicated volunteer group with diverse backgrounds ranging from high school students to astrobiologist Dr. John Chalmers and microbiologist Dr. Irene Trovato. In addition, we invite our visitors to participate in conducting these experiments on a daily basis. The famous experiments carried out by Stanley Miller and Harold Urey at the University of Chicago in the 1950s are re-imagined as a functional art installation. The early experiments simulated the chemical and energetic conditions of the early Earth, 4 billion years ago, resulting in the production of a number of organic molecules necessary for the origin of life. We now consider whether changing sea and atmosphere conditions will yield not only amino acids, but nucleic acids, too—the building blocks of genetic information and sources of cellular energy. Could life still be originating on Earth today?
