SAN DIEGO, CA—The Fleet Science Center is pleased to announce the opening of BBC Earth’s Antarctica, an exciting documentary film narrated by Academy Award®-nominated actor, Benedict Cumberbatch. With never-before-seen footage, the story brings audiences to the farthest reaches of this wild and majestic continent. Antarctica opens in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater on Saturday, March 19, with a Fleet member preview day on Friday, March 18, 2022.

Antarctica captures a land of mystery and highlights how what happens there affects every single one of us. It is the coldest, driest, windiest place on Earth with the roughest oceans, but it is also where weird and wonderful creatures thrive in astounding abundance.

Moviegoers dive beneath sea ice, which is over 6 feet thick, to experience the alien world of its seafloor. Swim alongside playful seals, soar above mountain peaks, explore vast penguin colonies and witness the largest congregation of fin and humpback whales ever filmed.

Although incredibly remote from us, Antarctica and its surrounding South Ocean play a vital role for the entire planet by regulating ocean currents and sea levels. At the same time, its wildlife-filled waters can absorb enormous amounts of carbon from our atmosphere. No one owns Antarctica, but it will take global cooperation and collaboration to protect it to ensure the future health of our planet.

“We are excited to release this film at a crucial time in the environmental landscape. What happens in Antarctica has a major global significance across the planet and affects us all. We hope the film entertains and educates our audiences on how important the environmental health of Antarctica is to the rest of the world. We could not have chosen a better narrator for this film as Benedict’s iconic voice takes us all on an incredible journey,” states Jonathan Williams, Executive Producer & Head of Commercial, BBC Earth.

Antarctica opens Saturday, March 19, in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater at the Fleet Science Center. There is an Antarctica Public Opening Party (POP) to celebrate this new documentary. Guests are invited to attend on this special day for giveaways, special promotions and fun for the entire family. The Antarctica POP activities are included with admission to the science center. Tickets are available at the ticket counter and online. For more information on this event, visit fleetscience.org/events/antarctica-pop.

Antarctica is executive produced by BBC Earth and distributed by SK Films, directed by Fredi Devas and Producer Jonny Keeling.
