Extreme Weather, the New IMAX Film, Opens November 11 at the Fleet
San Diego—The Fleet Science Center presents an immersive new giant screen film experience that brings audiences face-to-face with Mother Nature at her most dangerous. From National Geographic, Extreme Weather opens at the Fleet on Friday, November 11, 2016, in the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theater
Filmmakers capture the action on the front lines of our planet's changing climate. Witness massive chunks of ice shear off of Alaska's melting glaciers with explosive force. In the Midwest, storm chasers risk their lives to capture important data that helps us understand fierce and deadly tornadoes. And in drought-ravaged California, embed with courageous first-response firefighters working to contain raging infernos.
Directed and filmed by Sean Casey (star of Discovery Channel's "Storm Chasers," director of "Tornado Alley" and cinematographer for "Forces of Nature"), Extreme Weather showcases breathtaking cinematography reflecting Casey's lifelong immersion in the world of giant-screen nature documentaries.
"I've always had a fascination with weather," said Casey. "For this film, we wanted to go into the field and capture incredible imagery. The 150-foot flames, the 400-foot wall of ice falling, the tornadoes—there's a majesty to all of that. The way I see it, Extreme Weather lives at the crossroads of beauty and destruction."
Narrated by Emmy Award®-winning actor Michael C. Hall ("Dexter," "Six Feet Under"), Extreme Weather features insights from experts, including National Geographic Emerging Explorer Dr. Erin Pettit and Oklahoma tornado researcher Justin Walker, demonstrating how climate change is rapidly affecting our land, oceans and atmosphere. The film unveils the surprising linkages between these three areas, demonstrating how a small change in one place can have large effects elsewhere and produce natural disasters as ruinous as they are spectacular.
