La Conexion: San Diego’s Fleet Science Center Unveils ‘Color in a New Light’ Exhibit

October 20, 2023—A new and exciting exhibit, “Color in a New Light,” is set to open its doors to the public this Saturday, promising visitors a captivating journey into the captivating world of light and color. The presentation, organized by the Fleet Science Center in Balboa, is intended to engage visitors’ curiosity and senses through interactive and immersive experiences.

Paul Siboroski, the exhibit’s curator, hopes that as visitors walk through, they’ll have the chance to take a moment to think about everyday things we tend to overlook, aspects that don’t usually catch our eye in our daily routines. Siboroski stated, “Color has different meanings for different people. Color can be made in so many different ways. There’s science to it, but this is something that contributes to the beauty and our understanding of the world around us. We’re very visual species. We use our eyes to see, and I hope people will be able to stop and think how color could play a role in their everyday life.”

The exhibit is divided into four distinct areas, each offering unique insights into the fundamental concepts of light and color:

1. How Dark is Dark? The journey begins in complete darkness, immersing visitors in an environment where they can experience how light behaves. It’s a place where you’ll witness the profound depths of darkness, a place “blacker than black.”

2. Light We Can’t See: Venturing into the invisible light realm, visitors will discover the wonders of infrared and ultraviolet light. This section offers valuable insights into the relevance of these unseen light forms in modern technology.

3. Light We Can See: In this section, visitors dive into the visible light spectrum. Here, they gain a deeper understanding of optics and learn how colors are created by reflected light, unraveling the magic behind the captivating hues that surround us.

4. Color: The final area invites visitors to experiment with and mix different hues, illuminating their surroundings and immersing themselves in the vibrant world of color.
