The Fleet Science Center to host Discover Exoplanets: The Search for Alien Worlds

November 05, 2018

San Diego, CA—The Fleet Science Center is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition, Discover Exoplanets: The Search for Alien Worlds. Opening on Saturday, November 10, this interactive exhibition explores the fascinating world of space science and astronomy. Discover Exoplanets covers topics such as the search for habitable worlds beyond our solar system and how NASA scientists are searching for these worlds.

Discover Exoplanets features multimedia activities where visitors can build their own solar systems, see the most recent NASA discoveries and learn about whether popular TV shows and movies feature facts or fiction. A unique aspect of this exhibition is that the San Diego Central Public Library is hosting an exhibit with similar content, and the two venues are working together on a variety of events open to the public.

"We are proud that the Fleet was selected to be one of seven sites nationwide to host the Discover Exoplanets exhibition," said Fleet Science Center President and CEO Steve Snyder. "We have partnered with the San Diego Central Public Library to help bring this important exhibition to our community. We think people of all ages will find that Discover Exoplanets explores the universe and our place in it in a way that is understandable, inspirational and relevant."

The Fleet will offer a related series of events for a wide range of ages. A few of these events are:

  • The Sky Tonight: Beauty of the Solar System

Our solar system has a wide range of environments, and each world has its own grandeur. Join the Fleet Science Center’s resident astronomer for this planetarium show and explore the beauty of our solar system. This event takes place on Wednesday, November 7, at 7 & 8:15 p.m. in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater at the Fleet Science Center. Tickets can be purchased online at fleetscience.org or at the Fleet’s ticket counter.

  • Molecool Tuesday: An Introduction to Exoplanets

Did you know that scientists have discovered planets outside of our solar system? They’re called exoplanets, and there are more than 3,800! Join the team from Boyce-Astro to learn about exoplanets through a visual presentation, hands-on activity and a Q&A session. This event will be hosted on Tuesday, November 13, 4:30–6 p.m., at the Logan Heights Branch Library (567 S. 28th St., San Diego, CA 92113). Free.

  • Suds & Science Special Edition: Finding New Habitable Worlds

Some people believe that humans will need to look to inhabit new worlds if we want to survive. Some scientists are looking closely at exoplanets as the solution. Join researchers Dr. Adam Burgasser, Dr. Shelley Wright and Dr. William Welsh as we discuss what it takes to find new worlds and what our odds are to move to another planet someday. This event will be held on Monday, November 19, from 6:30–8 p.m. at Mission Brewery (1441 L St., San Diego, CA 92101). $5.00.
