Led by the Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation (CDEF), the California STEAM Symposium provides a platform for participants and partners to explore innovative ways to integrate STEAM into the classroom. Complete with peer-led panels from across California and hands-on learning activities, we were inspired to see how the CDEF is dedicated to reaching new groups of students. During the Building Toward Belonging: Black, Indigenous, and Latina Girls in STEAM panel presented by TechBridge Girls, we learned of their commitment to challenge gender, racial, and class bias in STEAM fields by developing inclusive curricula focused on representation.

Through the activities provided, we were surprised at how often we interacted with STEAM daily. We could also identify the moments in our schooling where our curiosity could have developed into a STEAM-focused academic path with more support. It re-ignited the importance and passion behind initiatives we champion at the Fleet, such as BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering) and SciTech.

We invite you to share your ah-ha! STEAM moments with us, your vision for what STEAM looks like in your classroom or school and how the Fleet can further its mission of realizing a San Diego where everyone is connected to the power of science.
