The Moment of Truth

By Jackie Valentine

Just a few weeks ago, the Fleet hosted our second Paper Airplane Day in the theater lobby. Participants mixed aerodynamics with origami techniques to construct a properly balanced plane. The planes had to be the right size and shape to generate enough lift to fly. No cuts or tape were allowed. Drawing on the templates of the current paper airplane distance world record holder, we explored sophisticated “nose locking” folds that helped keep the nose end components of the plane together during flight.

We had so much fun exploring flight during Paper Airplane Day. We took the rules that were given to us and made up new ones. We found a new way to explore and experience the world around us. I hope you make it out the next time we have Paper Airplane Day. It is one of my favorite Studio X events. But until then, don’t be afraid to try something new. Don’t think that just because something hasn’t been done that it is impossible. There’s no limit to the innovation possible when we take a look at things from a different perspective. So get out there and take a look for yourself.
