Go Out with the Fleet Science Center

Celebrate Science Madness with Bars, Bears and Brains all over San Diego

March 05, 2020

San Diego, CA—The Fleet Science Center has planned an amazing week-long celebration of science and beer—just for grown-ups! Event attendees can explore the intersection of art and science, hang out with scientists in bars, deconstruct the social science of horror films and wrap it all up by celebrating Pi Day (3.14) at the Fleet. The events take place all over San Diego from Monday, March 9, through Saturday, March 14, 2020.

  • On March 9, discover the gross-yet-fascinating science of farts, burps and more with Suds & Science: Under Pressure. The event goes from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Thorn Brewing in North Park.
  • Is climate change just fake news? Explore this hot topic with a very special edition of Two Scientists Walk into a Bar on Tuesday, March 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hess Brewing.
  • Where do science and art intersect? Two artists and scientists will join us to talk about the art and science behind their collaboration for the San Diego Art Institute's newest exhibition in this edition of Suds & Science. On March 11, artists Sheeana Rae Dowling and Akiko Surai will be joined by scientists Dr. Olivier George, UCSD, and Dr. Krishna Vadodaria, Salk Institute. On March 16, artists Bill Feeney and Bhavna Mehta will be joined by scientists Dr. Samuel Pfaff, Salk Institute, and Dr. Ben Frable, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Both events will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the San Diego Art Institute.
  • On Thursday, March 12, celebrate Women in STEM with a special edition of Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar, featuring 50 STEMinists at 25 bars all over San Diego County, from Vista to Chula Vista.
  • Are robots and artificial intelligence (AI) taking over the world? On March 13, Speaking of Science digs into how AI and machine learning are used today and where it will take us in the future. This event is hosted at the OASIS Lifelong Learning Center at the Grossmont Shopping Center.
  • On Friday, March 13, get a sneak peak of the new program series in collaboration with the Comic-Con Museum: Pop Culture Science. Join us to find out why some horror movies scare us so deeply, why some people seek out horror films and how horror films offer audiences new types of knowledge that can prove disturbing or downright scary. The event is at the Comic-Con Museum from 7–9:30 p.m. and the talk is followed by a screening of Jordan Peele’s Get Out.
  • Saturday, March 14, is Easy as Pi! Wrap up the week by celebrating the nation’s geekiest holiday at the Fleet with drinks, brains and all things Π.

The Fleet Science Center has planned this special lineup of 21+ science events to coincide with the annual San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, taking place Saturday, March 7, through Sunday, March 15, 2020.

The festival kicks off with EXPO Day at PETCO Park on Saturday, March 7. The event is free and open to the public. Look for the Fleet's booth at the festival for exciting science interactives and keep an eye on the main stage to witness loud, messy and shocking science from the Fleet's Don't Try This at Home! live show.
